Selim I, nicknamed Yavuz ("the grim"), was the ninth Ottoman sultan. His chief achievement as sultan was conquering the Mamluk realms, annexing Egypt, Syria, and the Hijaz to an increasingly powerful Ottoman Empire. He is also remembered for his ruthless tactics in securing the throne for himself in a succession dispute with his brothers (hence his nickname).
