Derna is a coastal town on the eastern ridges of the Akhdar Mountains where Wadi Derna (Derna Diver) flows into the Mediterranean. It was the location of the Hellenistic era city of Dernis, but the contemporary city was founded in the 15th century.
On 10 September 2023, much of the city was wiped out by catastrophic flooding caused by the collapse of upstream dams on Wadi Derna during Tropical Storm Daniel.
