Alawite ruler born 1645/1055 AH, Moulay Ismaïl is regarded as a great military leader who also built some of Morocco's best known monuments, including the imperial city of Meknès where he is buried. He created a strong, fiercely loyal army, allowing him to recaptured the ports of Larache, AsilahMehdia, and Tangier from European forces.
