The mausoleum was built in 1972 in memory of Dr. Zakir Hussain (1897-1969), the third president of India who served from 1967 to his death. The museum added onto the site has, among other things, personal belongings of Dr. Zakir Hussain including his collection of geological specimens.
Eight carved and tapered reinforced concrete walls arranged as a square in plan support a shallow concrete dome and surround the tomb with an open structure.
