Fai-Fah is a TMB Bank initiative to build disenfranchised children’s confidence while subtly teaching them life skills. The architects used interactive workshops with children/teenagers and volunteers in the first centre they built to develop their design for this, the second. It involved the conversion of two standard shop-houses into one educational space. The five levels - living room, library, art studio, dance studio and art pod (gallery) - are distinguished by different colour themes and are linked by a central feature staircase inspired by the yellow brick road. The facade screen with its symbolic ladder motif differentiates the building from its neighbours. The ‘utility stick’ in the courtyard houses toilets and services.
