Public Space Renovation Programme
Bao'an, China

This programme seeks to reinvigorate five urban voids to create new public spaces that reconnect city and citizens. Each is treated differently with a site-specific response that restores links between neighbourhoods. A public arts plaza transforms a parking lot on one site. On another, the traditional literary theme of combining the extremely artificial and natural is explored. A third site comprises curving lines in dialogue with the surrounding streaming traffic. The next site was sunken and so disconnected from local urban activity. It has been covered in an undulating skin creating intimate enclaves. The final site reflects Shenzhen’s recent past using the natural topography, traditional courtyards and bamboo plantings.
