Uttorayon Township
Siliguri, India

This project aims to provide a model for low-cost development that respects the environment and encourages community living. All the homeowners are treated as equal stakeholders, and the site is divided into clusters of 20 plots that vary in size but share access to communal green space and a pedestrian and cycle network linking to schools and shops. This cluster system also allows a variety of configurations according to changing demands. The scheme exploits the topography and climate: existing streams have been integrated into the drainage system, and the buildings are carefully placed to allow natural ventilation and control solar gain.
