Sufyia Mosque
Sterlitamak, Russian Federation
Sufiya Mosque is the culmination of a local businessman’s dream to build a mosque in his native village. As it was part financed by public donation, the community was involved in early design decisions including the traditional tulip form of the dome. Local influence is also evident in the red brick and white marble construction and the decorative motifs that combine the canons of Islamic art with traditional Russian arts and crafts, including botanical motifs. The mosque is sited in a rural village in the Republic of Bashkira, where it is perceived as a lighthouse on the open plain attracting Muslim pilgrims from across the country.
