This centre offers free help for patients affected by heart disease. Many of these are children, whose hearts are damaged by rheumatic fever, and the centre is the hub of a network of paediatric units that EMERGENCY plans to build in the Sudan and neighbouring countries. Including hospital blocks, a guest house, administration areas and a meditation pavilion, the centre aims to convey a sense of security and cosiness: its low pavilions were chosen for their unintimidating human scale, and they are set around a courtyard to suggest safe enclosure. Energy consumption is kept to a minimum with insulation, solar panels and heat transfer systems.
