Volubilis Archeaological Museum
Oualili, Morocco
This museum complex provides both exhibition and research facilities and is the first of its kind in Morocco. It forms a narrow imprint on the perimeter of an active archaeological dig so it does not detract from the ancient Roman and Islamic ruins that make up this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum consists of a series of wooden volumes along a retaining wall that are buried or suspended depending on the existing topography. The entry platform and main volume are suspended, creating shaded exterior spaces for display and education below. The project aims to inspire the creation of similar cultural institutions across the country.
