Embassy of Iran
Tbilisi, Georgia
This embassy seeks to apply the key characteristics of Iranian architecture rather than just surface ornament. A solid stone facade faces a street to the north, not only meeting practical requirements of security and privacy but also referring to the inward-looking nature of Iranian buildings. A large opening pierces this solid face, providing views through the south-facing glass facade to a park beyond so that, as in Iran, the building gradually unfolds as the viewer makes the transition from public to private. The embassy takes advantage of its sloping site to provide underground accommodation, reducing its overall height.
