This state-of-the-art ophthalmological centre serves Iran and the wider Middle East thanks to its central location in Tehran. The six storey reinforced concrete structure has a glazed curtain wall north facade and washed concrete rear elevation. Emphasis is placed on the high quality of the interior to appeal to ‘medical tourists’, particularly the luxurious sweeping stair in the double height lobby. At the same time the colour palette and materials have been selected to provide a comforting, homelike atmosphere to counter the psychological tension of patients. Most spaces have been designed specifically to suit the activities within them, demonstrating the close collaboration of architect and client.
