Revitalisation of Al Bastakiya Public Spaces
Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The revitalisation of the public open spaces was considered an integral part of the project to revitalise the historic Bastakiya district of Dubai. The guiding principle was a respect for the authenticity of the historic fabric and therefore interventions have been minimal, limited to the installation of traditional stone bench seating, Indian almond and date palm trees, paving and lighting features along the streets and within the nodes and courtyards. The spaces have been kept flexible with minimal design interventions, to allow for different types of cultural activites and provide places for people to walk around in a city where historic public spaces are rare.
