Response to climate - and in particular the provision of shade - shaped METU's new outpost in Northern Cyprus. Three autonomous buildings, housing administration, library and IT facilities, form clear-cut volumes with deep verandahs that protect users from direct sunlight. Spanning between the buildings, a monumental 43-metre canopy provides a shaded meeting place at the heart of campus. The main construction is in-situ reinforced concrete, while the canopy is a steel structure with modular aluminium louvres. A common palette of finishing materials - natural stone, plaster and anthracite aluminium glazing - unites the three buildings.
