Mosque and Madrasa of Mehmed-Pasha Kukavica
Foca, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The 18th-century Mosque of Mehmed-Pasha Kukavica is the only mosque that was dynamited during the Bosnian war and yet not totally destroyed. It is being preserved in order to keep alive the cultural memory of the surviving Muslim population. The project consists of three phases: conservation of the remaining building fragments of the mosque and attached madrasa; preparation of a feasibility study for their comprehensive rehabilitation; restoration works. The first phase, now complete, has built up collaborations with local primary schoolchildren and the faculty of architecture at Sarajevo University.
