The Minaret of Jam is a fragile reminder of the achievements of the Ghurid civilisation which dominated west-central Afghanistan from the mid-12th to the early 13th century. Its consolidation - part of a 46-year project to safeguard the monument - is an emergency intervention, carried out under extremely challenging conditions. Besides repairing and strengthening the brick base of the minaret, it has been necessary to protect the foundations against water infiltration by clearing the Jam riverbed and repairing the gabions along the riverbank. By contracting local companies and training workers, the project has contributed to the economic development of the area.
