Dates: 1583-1997 Described by the <a href="http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300192167" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Getty AAT</a> as that "Culture, period, and styles in the British colonies, typically featuring a combination of British and native characteristics," British colonialism began with the first overseas possessions claimed by Britain, and continued until the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, an event described by Prince Charles as the end of the "Age of Empire." In fact, Britain still retains a great deal of influence over its overseas territories. The beginning and end of the British Colonial period varies from one area to another, depending on when the area came under British rule and when the colonial period ended. similarly, the characteristics of British Colonial art and architecture vary according to the place and date of creation, a well as the influence of the colonized culture(s). For example, 18th-century colonial architecture in New Delhi will differ greatly from that designed for early 20th-century Lagos, in spite of the fact that both were British colonies.
