Independence Monument
Accra, Ghana

Commissioned by Kwame Nkruman, this monument is a rectangular triumphal arch wit its center opening divided into three with rectangular piers, creating two narrower gates of equal height on each side of the larger center rectangle. A large black star sits atop the monumnent. The attic is inscribed with "AD 1957" with the words "Freedom and Justice" below the date. Built to celebrate Ghana's independence from Great Britain in 1957, it sits in the center of Independence Square in Accra . The square was completed in 1961, coinciding with the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ghana.
