Place for Contemplation and Meditation
Malacca, Malaysia

Re-use of a Chinese shop house into a meditation facility. The pre-war building, set in baroque style in the historical city of Malacca, was refashioned following years of decay. Four different volumes were inserted into the space, including a meditation volume or 'box'. The landscape was heavily renovated but gold leaf designs and built-in cupboards were conserved or reused. All new materials were of local origin, such as timber slats and steel. The landscape includes several courts, namely a bamboo court, entrance forecourt, pool court, dining court, and garden court.
