Reconstruction of the Historical Centre
Turkestan, Kazakhstan

This project was conceived in honour of Turkistan's 1500-year anniversary. With the help of local townspeople, the historical centre -- a twelve hectare area surrounding the Mausoleum of Khodja Ahmad Yasawi -- was fully reconstructed. Modern buildings and new pedestrian zones were added, and old and decayed buildings were accurately reproduced so as to revive the more traditional and cultural aspects of the city, much of which had been lost during the Soviet period.
