The first stage of the restoration and redevelopment of Beirut's war-damaged, 185 hectare city centre has been completed. Over nine years, the private-public company, Solidere, has carried out residential, office, retail and hotel projects as well as restoring 265 salvaged buildings and 26 public and religious buildings. Emphasis on thorough planning, urban design and development control has led to the model influencing many planning projects in Lebanon.
