The Grand Medina is a 1,000 unit housing programme in Dakar. The principal goal of the project was to provide housing and to introduce social standards previously not known in Senegal. For each of three income groups (very-low, low, and middle) the plot area, the total built area, ceiling height, materials, sanitary equipment, and total costs were standardised. The construction system employs reinforced concrete and concrete blocks. Roofing is corrugated asbestos-cement. All concrete elements were cast in-situ, and only the sanitary and electrical installations were not of Senegalese provenance.
