Dassasgho Maternity Center
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

The project is a small, suburban clinic for pre-natal and paediatric care, as part of the Voltaic government's project to provide rural communities with health facilities. Compact and closed to the outside for both functional and climatic requirements, the 120 m2 center is organised around a small, landscaped patio, which provides natural daylight and ventilation. Mud-brick domes cover the rooms square or rectangular in plan, with flat, mud roofs on beds of teak branches. Mud-brick bearing walls are very thick, and rest on concrete foundations. The whole is rendered in earth-lime plaster, and much use is made of brightly coloured wall painting.
