Khan Jaljulia Restoration
Jaljulia, Israel

The Khan Jaljulia Restoration is a Palestinian historical heritage site that is being preserved in a two-step-scheme. Before the Khan’s remains can be restored and adapted for use, the site is transformed into an open market space, in order to raise funds for the restoration. Meanwhile, the site is being used as a social space for cultural and festive events. The project aims at reconnecting the people to their cultural heritage and providing a space for communal activities. The project draws on the modest design of the historical Khan for the simple and low-cost construction plan. It aims to recover the destroyed east side of the Khan. An elevated platform made of local stone features tiered seating for public events made of a simple iron structure. In the centre of the site, a new square platform of 367 square metres has been added that refers to the colonnaded courtyards of Arab mosques and that will in the future host exhibition stalls. It is based on a simple construction system using a grid of columns, found in the Khan’s original design.
