Cheops Observatory Residence
Giza, Egypt

In an ancient village nearby the Great Pyramids, the project is an artist’s five-room studio, residence, and guest rooms, and a rooftop observatory from where to view the pyramids. Organised on one side of a garden and pool, the building is made entirely from mud-bricks laid by local craftsmen; most of the doors, windows, and shutters were recycled from abandoned structures in the village. The rooftop observatory is a metal frame structure with radiating purlins arranged to echo design of Cheops Pyramid; a removable canvas structure was woven by village weavers. All of the locally-crafted furnishings are moveable to permit a variety of configurations in each room.
