An existing sports facility was partially demolished to create a new gym and fitness centre with an exercise room, saunas, physiotherapy rooms, toilet and locker areas, offices, and an outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool. The architects confronted the challenges of a short calendar and limited budget; wherever possible, the concrete structure of the earlier facility was retained; new steel and concrete elements were introduced in other areas. Only the shower, toilet, locker, and sauna areas feature high-quality finishes; elsewhere the structural materials are left exposed to further reduce costs. The demolition and new construction works were undertaken simultaneously in order to meet the tight deadline.
