St. Carolus Hospital Screening Facility
Jakarta, Indonesia

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Jakarta’s hospitals lacked proper facilities for a safe triage process. The Micro Treatment Facility programme was established to respond to the urgent need by creating medical facilities that are quick to construct, scaleable, flexible in size, and adaptable to various locations. The design is crafted around WHO guidelines for severe acute respiratory infection, including the requirement for natural ventilation. The St Carolus Hospital facility was the first of several to be built so far. Its 32-metre-long, semi-permanent structure comprises a white scaffold frame, bangkirai-wood decking, polycarbonate cladding, and corrugated uPVC roof conceived to shield from heat gain. Prefabricated in two weeks and erected in four days, it accommodates a reception area, waiting area, screening booth, and medical staff area. Cubicles each contain a seat and a wheelchair space. One exit leads to the hospital lobby, the other to the Upper Respiratory Tract infection clinic.
