Child-Friendly Public Spaces

A pilot project initially for six different communities in Jakarta, each space provides a library and a multipurpose room, a children’s healthcare clinic and nursery, and a family welfare clinic, as well as outdoor amphitheatres, medicinal gardens, fish ponds, open green areas, and toilet facilities. Each of the six projects was designed in collaboration with local residents to determine exact needs; all employ simple, inexpensive, locally-available materials and plants, and with limited, minimal budgets. The first six pilot projects were so successful that 127 more were undertaken throughout Jakarta in phases during the subsequent three years through 2017, all by younger practitioners identified and invited by the original architects.
