The project is a model for a culturally sensitive, socially inclusive, and environmentally conscious approach for architectural interventions in humanitarian crises. Inspired by the textile traditions of the Middle East and North Africa, modular tapestries are made from recycled clothes and discarded textiles; the tapestries comprise several layers of fabric that are sewn together and used to insulate and decorate the interiors and/or exteriors of standardised modular housing for refugees. The refugees at the Zaafari camp drew on the embroidery traditions of their native Syria to create new designs in expressions of cultural and environmental resilience.
