In the Kurdistan Autonomous Region, the therapeutic centre and gardens serve victims of regional strife. The completed first phase of the project provides vegetable gardens and animal-assisted therapy for women and children; now under construction are a bakery, a theatre, and community facilities and workshops. The ensemble of eleven completed volumes is styled as a village and arranged around a series of courtyards. The thick adobe walls are roofed with wood beams; wood-latticed doors and windows provide natural cross ventilation, as do upper openings filled with angled rows of adobes; and light timber roofs are used to create porches around the courtyards. Construction was undertaken by local residents and volunteers from students at three German universities.
