Ddundu Residence and Farm
Mukono District, Uganda

On a rural 8-hectare site, the farm produces food staples (bananas, sweet potatoes, beans, maize, and coffee) that are made available at affordable prices to the local community in this low-income area of central Uganda; an additional economic stimulus is the employment of local residents to work the farm. The architectural component is a private residence with two living rooms, a dining room, a library, kitchen, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms; two separate structures provide staff housing and a poultry shed. The brick structures are erected on foundations of local stone, with timber roofs; passive heating and cooling systems are used to temper the climate. The rain-water collection and pump system are powered by solar energy.
