The market contains 112 shops and 69 stalls near Bethlehem’s most important monuments. It has been active since 1927 but had fallen into disrepair; the current project was undertaken in three stages to ensure continuous operation. In the lower market, water and sewerage infrastructure were replaced, a cistern repaired, and the existing buildings with shops were renovated; a new market was raised over the lower one to provide stalls for 50 additional farmers; and steel canopies were erected to provide shade. Phase two focused on rehabilitation of Al-Najajreh Street including the replacement of infrastructure, the renovation of exterior façades, and the provision of sidewalks, lighting, and paving. The third phase was rehabilitation of the upper market.
