Seven recycled shipping containers were used to expand an existing metal agricultural building to create a children’s recreation centre; prefabricated concrete was used for water and sanitation facilities. The interior spaces include areas for play, relaxation, and meals, and the exterior provides bicycle-training tracks, walls for the children to paint on, and shaded gathering areas. Since the facility is located on rented land, the architect and client agreed on a low-cost solution that could easily be dismantled and re-used elsewhere if needed. The centre currently serves 3,000 children daily, and can easily be expanded by the addition of more containers.
