Evliya Çelebi (Seyahatnâmesi, 1:138a) recounts that when Selim II (1566–1574) was traveling by the sea, he used to visit this area, where at the time there was only a fishing weir (balık dalyanı). He had fish cooked in the shade of the cypress trees, and later ordered the grand vizier Sadrazam Sokullu Mehmed Paşa to build a village called Tarabya for him. It was one of the forty imperial gardens.
