Evliya Çelebi describes this place as follows: Since it has become a prosperous place at the time of Süleyman, it is called Yeniköy [New Village]. However, it is a bejeweled new city with 3,000 prosperous houses, gardens, and vineyards. . . . There are 9,000 orchards and vineyards in its mountains and hills (Seyahatnâmesi, 1:137b).
