Evliya Çelebi (Seyahatnâmesi, 1:134a) describes Tophane as follows: There are thousands of big palaces with gardens and orchards, vineyards, along with prosperous houses and waterfront mansions. Most of the citizens of Tophane are merchants, grocers, seafarers, and artillerymen. In addition to closely packed, narrow houses, there were palaces with gardens, orchards, and vineyards.
