A free school for children on the grounds of an abandoned factory, the new building contains two classrooms, a large hall that also accommodates classes, a library, and a covered performance stage; additional teaching and recreation areas are on the roof and throughout the landscaped grounds that are maintained by the children. The low-cost brick and bamboo building materials were gathered by the children and their families; reinforced concrete was used for the sanitary facilities; and the roof is a steel structure fitted with solar panels and arranged in a butterfly form to permit water harvesting. The active involvement of the children and their families yielded a unique and inspirational school that enhances learning and community participation.
