Enabling Village
Singapore, Singapore

Five existing structures that previously housed a 1970s vocational institute and one new information centre create an inclusive, landscaped facility for mentally and physically disabled users of all ages. It contains parks and playgrounds, clinics, a gym and physical rehabilitation centre, a kindergarten, training workshops and classrooms, an art gallery, a restaurant, and some housing. The existing buildings were retro-fitted with ramps and railings to accommodate wheelchairs and the disabled; extensive landscaping was introduced and punctuates the many outdoor gathering areas. Careful attention was given to providing easy access to nearby public transportation facilities and to integrating the village into the daily life of the nearby community. Recycled materials, including old timbers and shipping containers, were used wherever possible.
