Saw Swee Hock Student Centre
WC2, United Kingdom

The LSE Student’s Union needed to expand their current space allocation for existing facilities, and wanted to incorporate new facilities and house the whole student’s union under one roof. Due to the site’s location at the knuckle-point convergence of narrow streets that define the LSE campus, the architects needed to create a site-specific design that embodies the dynamics of a contemporary student centre yet one clad in brick that echoes its central London context. The faceted façade is tailored to lines of sight, to be viewed from street corner perspectives and make visual connections between internal and external circulation. Space flows freely in plan and section and accessibility and inclusivity were key design considerations.
