Kahrizak Apartment Building
Kahrizak, Iran

When responsibility for the project was delegated to the architects, two storeys had already been built and the client had serious budget limitations. All three sides of the building, containing four units of 50 m2 on each floor, were blocked, apart from the southern elevation, so the project focus was on the south units and the interaction between south elevation and the urban façade. Brick, an inexpensive and local material, was used and local workers were familiar with working with the material; the only challenge was to train them in the design, based on a fixed module. A new option at the same cost as standardised housing proved very popular in this low-income district.
