The rehabilitation of the Ensemble located in the historical urban centre of Ardabil, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, blends in with the surrounding mosque and shrine. The project has had many problems since its concept in 1997-98, and, during this time, the archaeological remains excavated in the square were protected. In 2003, design work started on the frontispiece of Ali-Qapu, with work completed in 2012. Local construction materials were used and a simple decoration was applied. The project has created a complete complex near the mausoleum and a cultural core in the city and it has prevented uncontrolled construction.
