The gardens of Dar al-Mandubiya have were recently transformed into a public park. The have also substantially expanded in size to include the Catholic cemetery to the north and the Muslim cemetery to the west. Walls surrounding the cemeteries were removed, litter removed, and landscaping projects carried out.
Though it did have a remarkable impact on the landscape of the city, opening up green space and scenic views from places that one gazed only at whitewashed walls, the impact of removing the cemetery walls was also practical. Where it was once necessary to walk around the cemeteries to get from one side to the other, there are now pathways through them. It has also eliminated the cover for criminal activity once provided by the high walls.
