ABSTRACT

The Literary Movement in Damascus 1800-1918

الحركة الأدبية في دمشق، ١٨٠٠-١٩١٨

This book leads the reader through the different stages of the Damascene literary movement during the Ottoman rule between 1800 and 1918. It depicts the development of this literary movement from a static or traditional style to a more selective trend, departing from old models and adopting a revolutionary tone. This new style was used in the intellectual struggle to sow the seeds of national Arab awakening.

Each movement had its own literary subjects and sources, and its success depended upon the Ottoman rulers’ policies in the Arabic speaking regions.

The book attempts to shed light on a much understudied subject in the late Ottoman period. Although it is a pioneering work, its conclusions cannot be easily verified. Its methodology is based on exploring the quality and quantity of subjects and sources that prevailed in each stage of the literary movement.

The study prioritises the works of the most successful literary movements in Damascus.

In conclusion, this book provides a general overview of the literary movement in Damascus by looking at its various subjects, sources, stages and the circumstances in which they had been developed under Ottoman rule.
