Lagos State College of Education
David O. Aradeon passed away on September 30th, 2024 in his Florida home, just 37days shy of his 91st birthday. He graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Historical Preservation in 1966, winning the Paris Prize Travelling Scholarship for the Best Architectural Thesis Project in USA. He would work for the offices of Oppenheimer, Brady and Lehrecke, NY in ’67, Gilbert Associates, Inc Pennsylvania from ’67 - ’68 and Giovanni Pasanella AIA in ’69, before winning the Ford Foundation grant to study human settlements in West and North Africa from ’68 - ’71.
Like many of his generation, he returned to Lagos, Nigeria to contribute to the development of a newly independent nation - taking up Lecturing at the 2 - year old University of Lagos' Department of Architecture and becoming Nigeria’s 128th registered architect in 1973.
David Aradeon rose to the rank of a full Professor of Architecture in '79 and took pride in standing for his beliefs even if he stood alone. He masterminded changing the admission requirements from the reductive requirements which the architecture school shared with other non-creative disciplines to one that could attract students with the potential for creative work. NLE’s Kunle Adeyemi and the RCA-trained Vehicle Designer and architect, Dapo Akintunde are among examples of the stellar cast of students who were sired through this system.
He was a man of many pursuits. He was curator, set designer, masterplanner, and government adviser. He curated the African Architectural Technology exhibition at FESTAC '77 and his work was exhibited in Documenta 12, Kasel in 2007.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan; his sons 'Dewole, Jide and daughter Lisa and grandchildren.
He was a supporter of A3: Archives of African Architectures and gave a lecture at the A3-Archnet- organised Panel titled: Architecture: The Search for Identity & Justice.
