Mr. Charles Boccara is a Tunisian architect who grew up in Morocco. He completed his architecture training at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1968. He returned to live in Morocco permanently in 1971, and established his private practice in Marrakech. Mr. Boccara's body of work draws on local building traditions while aiming to create a modern architecture appropriate to Morocco.
This massive project has been under construction for more than 25 years and remains incomplete. According to the venues list for Marrakech Biennale,
Plans for the theatre were begun in the
1970's with Tunisian architect Charles Boccara appointed to take the
project forwards. The exterior, reception and outdoor theatre were
completed and inaugurated in 2001 after 25 years of construction.
However, the 800 person capacity opera house remains a cavernous
