Born and raised in the greater Los Angeles area, Ms. Krugmeier developed an interest in residential architecture through periodicals and books as early as elementary school. Moving to the Bay Area, she earned an undergraduate degree in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley in the early 70’s, then chose to practice for nearly two years before entering graduate school. As a student in the Master of Architecture program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning, she developed an interest in the public realm – the relationship between buildings and urban form – a theme that carried forward into her career. After ten years’ practice at a firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts and another in San Francisco, California she joined BAR Architects (also of San Francisco) in 1990, becoming a Principal in 1997. Supplementary to her architectural practice designing urban, mixed-use, and multi-family developments, she undertook a research project in 2010 exploring the urban form of vernacular neighborhoods in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, presenting her report to UNESCO Tashkent in 2015. About that time, Ms. Krugmeier scaled back her professional responsibilities. She has continued to consult with BAR Architects as well as to pursue personal projects. She resides in Oakland, California and Milan, Italy, the home city of her husband, Giovanni (Gianmaria) Zanderighi.
