Michael Frishkopf is a professor of music, the director of the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology, and an adjunct professor of religious studies at the University of Alberta, Canada. His research centers on music and sound in Islam, the Arab world, and West Africa, including an edited collection, Music and Media in the Arab World (2010). Frishkopf has served as member of advisory or editorial boards for the journals Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, and Review of Middle East Studies; he founded the Society for Arab Music Research and served on the board for the Society for Ethnomusicology.
