Federico Spinetti is a professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Cologne, Germany. His research has primarily focused on the political economy of music in Soviet and post-Soviet Central Asia, particularly Tajikistan; on musical relations across the Mediterranean Sea (including his edited collection Giuseppe Donizetti Pasha: Musical and Historical Trajectories between Italy and Turkey, 2010); and on contemporary Italian popular music. Since 2006 he has been researching the music-architecture nexus in the context of the Iranian traditional martial arts gymnasium (zūrkhāneh), directing a documentary film on this topic (Zurkhaneh: The House of Strength—Music and Martial Arts of Iran, 2011).
