Kılıç Ali Paşa was born in Italy as Giovanni Dionigi Galeni. Captured and enslaved as a young man by the Ottomans, he became a rower for the Ottoman fleet and then rose through the ranks as a general to become a grand admiral, achieving a high social standing. He lived to an old age and is known for his architectural patronage as well as his military exploits.
