Cerrah Mehmed Paşa was a devshirme recruit who rose through the ranks, serving as a Janissary. After marrying Gevherhan Sultan, the half-sister of Sultan Osman II, he was promoted to the rank of beylerbeyi. He eventually became a vizier and finally grand vizier.
